Most of us naturally like being in control. Whether it’s our finances, family, career, or future, we often want to make our own decisions. But in Matthew 21, Jesus reminds us that true peace and purpose are found when we recognize His authority over every part of our lives.
As Jesus taught in the temple during the final week before His crucifixion, the religious leaders questioned His authority. Instead of giving a direct answer, Jesus told the Parable of the Tenants. In the story, a landowner planted a vineyard and entrusted it to tenants. When it came time to collect the harvest, the tenants rejected and abused the servants the owner sent. Finally, the owner sent his own son, believing they would respect him. Instead, they killed him.
This powerful parable points to God’s relationship with His people. The landowner represents God, the servants represent the prophets He faithfully sent, and the son represents Jesus Himself. Rather than accepting God’s authority, the religious leaders rejected the very One God had sent to save them.
Jesus then declared that He is the Cornerstone—the foundation on which everything else must be built. Just as the cornerstone determined the strength and direction of an entire building, our lives must be built on Christ if we want a firm foundation that will last.
This passage challenges us to ask three important questions:
- Is Jesus the Owner of your life? Everything we have ultimately belongs to God. Our time, talents, resources, and relationships are gifts He has entrusted to us, and we are called to steward them faithfully.
- Is Jesus Lord of every area? Following Christ is more than attending church on Sundays. It means allowing Him to guide our decisions, relationships, finances, and everyday lives.
- Is Jesus your Cornerstone? When Jesus is the foundation of our lives, every decision, goal, and direction is shaped by His truth instead of our own desires.
The religious leaders chose pride over repentance when Jesus exposed their hearts. We are given a different opportunity. When God’s Word challenges us, we can choose to surrender instead of resist. There is freedom, peace, and hope that come from trusting Jesus as both Savior and Lord.
No matter your past or the mistakes you’ve made, Jesus is still in the business of rebuilding lives. When we surrender our plans to Him and make Him the cornerstone of everything we do, we discover the abundant life He has always intended for us.
