Finding Your Identity and Allegiance in Matthew 22
Scripture: Matthew 22:15-33
Every day, we’re asked to give our loyalty to something.
Our career. Our politics. Our finances. Our reputation.
But in Matthew 22, Jesus asks a much deeper question:
“Whose image is on your life?”
While religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with difficult questions, He turned the conversation into a challenge that still confronts us today.
Give to God What Belongs to God
When the Pharisees asked Jesus whether people should pay taxes to Caesar, they believed they had created a no-win situation.
Instead, Jesus asked for a coin.
“Whose image is on it?”
When they answered, “Caesar’s,” Jesus responded:
“Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
The coin belonged to Caesar because it carried his image.
But you were created in God’s image.
That means your life ultimately belongs to Him.
A Divided Heart Never Leads to Peace
Jesus exposed more than the Pharisees’ bad motives.
He exposed their hypocrisy.
They claimed to honor God while privately clinging to power, comfort, and control.
It’s easy to point fingers at them, but we often do the same thing.
We say Jesus is Lord while holding back parts of our lives we don’t want Him to touch.
Real surrender means giving God everything—not just Sunday mornings.
Honor Authority, But Worship God Alone
Jesus wasn’t teaching blind loyalty to government.
He was teaching proper priorities.
As followers of Christ, we’re called to honor leaders, live with integrity, and respect authority whenever possible.
But our worship, identity, and ultimate obedience belong to God alone.
When culture and God’s Word collide, followers of Jesus choose faithfulness over compromise.
Jesus Is the God of the Living
The Sadducees tried to discredit the resurrection with a hypothetical question.
Jesus reminded them they misunderstood both Scripture and God’s power.
He declared that God is “not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
Because Jesus conquered death, our hope isn’t limited to this life.
The resurrection isn’t just something Christians believe.
It’s the foundation of everything we live for.
Who Has Your Heart?
Every person bears the image of God.
The real question is whether we’ve surrendered our lives back to the One who created us.
Jesus isn’t asking for part of your life.
He’s asking for all of it.
And the incredible news is that the One who asks for your heart is the same Savior who gave His life for you.
